Google rolled out its generative AI performance report and AI blocking controls globally, giving site owners first-party data on AI Overview visibility.

Google on September 1, 2026, completed the global rollout of its Search Console generative AI performance report and Search generative AI controls — tools that finally give site owners first-party data on how their content appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover.
If you manage SEO for any site with meaningful search traffic, these tools are now essential infrastructure.
What the Generative AI Performance Report Shows
The report appears as an expandable tab under the main Performance report in Search Console. It tracks:
- Impressions: How often URLs from your site appeared in generative AI features
- Pages: Which specific URLs showed up in AI-generated answers
- Countries: Geographic breakdown of AI visibility
- Devices: Desktop, tablet, and mobile distribution
- Dates: Hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly trends
Critically, the report does not include click data or query data. You can see that your page appeared in an AI Overview, but not what question triggered it or whether the user clicked through.
AI Blocking Controls
Alongside the performance report, Google rolled out controls that let site owners opt out of their content appearing in AI features — either as cited links or as grounding material for AI-generated answers.
As of August 31, 2026, these controls are available to all websites worldwide. Sites that previously excluded themselves from generative AI features may see empty performance reports as a result.
How to Use This Data
Baseline your AI visibility
Before optimizing, measure where you stand. Pull 90 days of generative AI impressions and compare to total Search impressions. What percentage of your visibility now comes from AI features?
Identify winning pages
Which URLs earn the most AI impressions? Analyze their structure, depth, and topic coverage. These pages are your template for AI-optimized content.
Track changes after updates
When Google expands AI Overviews to new query types or when you publish new content, the report shows impact within days — faster than waiting for traditional ranking changes.
Coordinate with blocking decisions
If your organization debates whether to allow AI use of your content, the performance report quantifies what you would lose by opting out. That makes the blocking decision data-driven rather than ideological.
Limitations to Keep in Mind
- No query data means you cannot see which questions trigger your AI appearances.
- No click data means you cannot calculate AI-specific CTR or conversion rates.
- Google only — this report covers Google's AI features, not ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude citations.
- Minimum data thresholds — smaller sites may not see the report if Google lacks sufficient impression volume.
What Comes Next
Google has said it expects to update the list of supported generative AI capabilities over time. Industry observers expect click and query data to arrive eventually, following the same pattern as the original Search Console performance report, which launched with limited dimensions before expanding.
For now, the generative AI performance report is the most authoritative source of truth about your site's visibility in Google's AI search products. Use it.
