Search Console's Generative AI Report Is Live — Here's How to Track Your LLM Visibility
Google's generative AI performance report and AI opt-out control are now available to all sites, giving publishers their first look at AI Overview impressions.

On August 31, 2026, Google made its generative AI performance report and AI opt-out control available to every site in Search Console. For publishers who have been flying blind on AI visibility, this is the first instrument panel.
What the Report Shows
The generative AI performance report provides:
- Impressions across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover
- Citation data showing when your content appears in AI-generated answers
- Trend data to track changes over time
What it does not yet show:
- Clicks from AI surfaces
- Query-level data for AI impressions
- Revenue attribution from AI-driven traffic
The UK Origin Story
The report's rollout has regulatory roots. It started in the UK after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) required Google to give publishers a way to opt out of AI features. That requirement drove both the opt-out control and the performance reporting that accompanies it.
Google says opting out will not affect standard search rankings, but it will remove your content from AI answers completely. This is a significant tradeoff: protect your content from AI summarization, or accept AI visibility at the cost of potential click erosion.
Known Data Issues
A logging error undercounted impressions from August 13 to 17. Google has acknowledged the issue. If your early data looks anomalously low, this may be why.
How to Use the Report
Step 1: Access the report
In Search Console, navigate to the Generative AI performance section. It should be available for all verified properties as of August 31.
Step 2: Establish baselines
Record your current impression counts across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover. Without baselines, you cannot measure the impact of content or algorithm changes.
Step 3: Identify citation patterns
Which pages get cited most frequently in AI answers? What topics, formats, and structures correlate with higher citation rates? This is your AEO playbook.
Step 4: Cross-reference with traditional search data
Compare AI impression trends with traditional search impression and click data. If AI impressions rise while clicks fall, your content is being summarized rather than visited.
Step 5: Decide on opt-out
For most publishers, opting out is counterproductive — you lose AI visibility without gaining clicks. But for premium content businesses where AI summarization cannibalizes subscriptions, the opt-out may make financial sense.
AEO Metrics That Matter
With the report live, AEO practitioners can finally track meaningful metrics:
| Metric | What It Tells You |
|---|---|
| AI Overview impressions | How often your content appears in AI answers |
| Citation frequency | How often you are named as a source |
| AI Mode vs. Overview split | Which AI surface drives your visibility |
| Trend over time | Whether your AEO efforts are working |
What Google Still Will Not Tell You
John Mueller reiterated on August 25 that there is nothing special to do for generative AI responses in Search — standard SEO applies. For Google's own AI surfaces, this is largely true. They draw on the same index and quality systems.
But outside Google, the rules differ. Orbit Media's citation study found four AI models cited the same domain for the same question just 1.7% of the time. Search Console's report covers Google only. Visibility in ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity requires separate tracking tools and strategies.
The Strategic Shift
The generative AI report forces a strategic question: are you optimizing for rankings, citations, or both?
Rankings still matter for queries where AI Overviews do not appear or do not fully answer the question. Citations matter for the growing share of queries where they do. The publishers who track both — and understand the tradeoffs — will navigate the transition better than those clinging to position-based metrics alone.
Action Items for This Week
- Verify the report is active for all your properties
- Export baseline data before making content changes
- Identify your top 10 most-cited pages and analyze their structure
- Compare AI impression trends with click data from the same period
- Document your opt-out decision and rationale for each property
The measurement era of AEO has begun. The publishers who start tracking now will have a data advantage when the next interface change arrives.
